Derya Akay has taken a playful, painterly approach to transforming Centre A’s gallery space into a unique site for hospitality and sharing. Entitled Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner & Supper, the project consists of a variety of food sharing events which include lunches open to the public on a first come, first served basis, as well as intimate dinners for limited groups of eight to ten people.

The exhibition runs from Wednesday, November 12th to Saturday, December 13th. On the opening day, soup will be served from 1pm and will be available until the supplies run out. The first dinner will be on Thursday, November 13th. For subsequent events, menus and schedules will be announced weekly, but expect lunches twice a week and dinners on Thursdays. The closing reception will be on Saturday, December 13th, from 7 to 10pm.

Participation is by donation. Contributions including, but not limited to, food ingredients (to be announced weekly), beverages and cash are greatly appreciated.

Derya Akay’s practice is a fluid interplay between artistic processes and the making of everyday objects, resulting in unique environments and experiences. Blurring the contours of art’s definition, Akay’s work consists of elements made, found or otherwise acquired; the immersive environments that result from these elements’ composition in space; the process of facilitating social gatherings; and the various individual and social experiences had therein. Further, Akay is interested in how knowledge is shared and spread through social exchange, particularly as it pertains to processes of gardening and the making everyday things such as furniture, food, and tableware. Here at Centre A, he creates a platform for considering modes of socio-economic organization, where the local community intersects with personal and institutional networks.

Derya Akay grew up in Istanbul, Adana, and New York. He is represented by The Apartment, Vancouver.
