Zone Flottante

In Mei-Kuei Feu’s video installation, Zone flottante, the sight of a series of Montreal row houses being demolished triggers memories of the destruction of her family home in Taipei for the purposes of building a highway. Zone flottante examines the actual, physical ‘emptying’ of two homes through city planning and development projects and their effect on the people close to these processes. This work anchors the theme of an exhibition which concerns the artist’s experience as an immigrant from Taiwan to the multi-cultural, multi-lingual context of Montreal, and her attempt to negotiate between memories of her former home country and its social conditions and her developing sense of place and identity as a permanent resident to Canada
