    “A Sultry World” is a giant red dress designed by Japanese artist, Norico Sunayama.\u00a0 The audience is invited to crawl under this skirt, which covers the floor of the gallery and is worn by a live model.<\/p>\n

    Norico\u00a0<\/strong>Sunayama is one of Japan’s top performance artists. Born in Yokohama and living in Gifu, Japan, Sunayama is a dancer and a performance artist who has presented her work in many cities around the world. She studied under Mika Kurosawa, one of the most famous contemporary dancers in Japan and in 1990 joined Dumb Type, an internationally-acclaimed multi-media performance group. Sunayama has also founded several collectives and performance units, including\u00a0The OK Girls<\/em>,\u00a0The Biters\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Kill Your TV in Singapore.<\/em><\/p>\n

    A Sulty World<\/em>\u00a0is one of her best known works. It was created for the Mito Art Center, Japan, in 1995 and has travelled the world for the past fourteen years, appearing in 10 cities in Europe, Asia and Canada. It was most recently seen at the Scotia Bank Nuit Blanche in Toronto, where over 3,000 people participated over the course of one night.<\/p>\n

    Norico Sunayama is the Mark Allison and Stephanie Holmquist artist-in-residence at Centre A, supported by a Visiting Foreign Artist grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. As her stage persona, C.Snatch Z., she will perform in the Vampyre Love Ball, the closing event of the LIVE Biennale 2009, at the Chapel Arts on Saturday, October 31 at 8pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
