Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art
Centre A is pleased to present this group exhibition of installation, photography, ceramics and video, showcasing recent developments in contemporary art in China, Taiwan and Canada.
Traveling to exhibitions in foreign countries and selling their work on a booming international market, Chinese contemporary artists are ideally positioned to observe the global impact of China’s economic revolution. At the same time, more and more international artists are making and showing work in China.
The artists in this exhibition use the tools of manufacturing and mass media to make art works that offer poetic reflections and humorous comments on our rapidly changing world. They remind us that behind the business and political headlines lies an economy of cultural exchange, from cooking to clothing to cell phone communication, that marks the personal, human side of globalisation, transforming the way we see ourselves and the world around us.
The exhibition is curated by Zheng Shengtian, co-curator of the 2004 Shanghai Biennale and managing editor of Yishu Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art.
We are extremely grateful to the Centre A co-founders Milton and Fei Wong for their lead patronage of this exhibition. We are also delighted to have the corporate sponsorship of the Salient Group and the Shanghai Fongrun Foreign Trade Co. Ltd. The participation of the Asia Pacific Foundation marks the first formal collaboration with an organisation that shares many of Centre A’s goals
