Emergency Biennale in Chechnya

Curated by Evelyne Jouanno, founder and artistic director of Emergency Biennale in Chechnya
Opening: Friday, July 7, 8pm
Symposium: July 8, 2006, 2:00-5:00pm

“Emergency Biennale in Chechnya” is crossing the Atlantic for the 7th stop of its world tour. This suitcase exhibition has already been seen in Paris, Brussels, Bolzano, Milan, Riga (Latvia) and Tallinn (Estonia), and is on its way to Grozny.

Intended to reintroduce Chechnya to an international audience while reacting to the phenomenal proliferation of international biennales, “Emergency Biennale in Chechnya” was conceived in a geopolitical context which has become so complex that it seemed urgent and necessary to mobilize the artists. The concept involved a call to artists from all over the world to create works to fit in a suitcase. For each stop, new artists are invited to join.

Emergency Biennale in Chechnya / Vancouver stop, is organized by Alice Ming Wai Jim, Kristina Podesva and Babak Golkar, and welcomes new invited artists: Hank Bull, Mo Salemy, Jayce Salloum, Rebecca Belmore, Ken Lum, Antonia Hirsch, Sabine Bitte and the IN[ ]EX group. Artists Carlos Franklin and Alexandre Périgot are coming from Paris.

There will be a panel discussion on July 8, 2pm, at Centre A, with Evelyne Jouanno (Artistic Director, Emergency Biennale), Dr. Mikhail Alexseev (San Diego State University), Kristin Cavoukian (M.A., University of British Columbia) and Don Wright (Amnesty International Vancouver Chapter), moderated by Dr. Jeff Derksen (Simon Fraser University).
