Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art
Centre A is proud to present “Elemental Forces,” a solo exhibition by the Toronto-based artist, Ed Pien. Featuring the artist’s most recent works, “Elemental Forces” presents Pien’s unique approach to drawing as installation. Influenced by Asian mythology and Western history, Pien’s hybrid assemblages of drawing, video, and sound draw from both Eastern and Western cultural influences to create an eerie and illusory world that recalls the work of Hieronymus Bosch and Francisco Goya. At Centre A, viewers are invited to explore and experience Pien’s sensual, drawing-based environments, which curiously elicit feelings of wonder and enchantment while also evoking the grotesque and uncanny.
Ed Pien was born in 1958 in Taipei, Taiwan and currently lives in Toronto. Since receiving his BFA (1982) from the University of Western Ontario and his MFA (1984) from York University, Pien has been widely exhibited throughout Canada and around the world in exhibitions held in Taipei, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Costa Rica, and London.
