Takatuf: from Salish Seas to Palestine
Presented in partnership with Centre A, The Vancouver Black Library, and The Burnaby Art Gallery, this group exhibition features the work of 22 emerging artists from the West Bank.
After nineteen months of one of the most brutal genocides of contemporary history, through the use of the Western weaponry and with the most death faced against the people of Gaza, the question still remains: what is the capacity for art to express these atrocities, from the heart of the atrocities themselves?
All the works of Takātuf: from Salish Seas to Palestine depict the Palestinian experience with a Palestinian brush. Takātuf brings artworks across colonial borders from the besieged West Bank to the unsurrendered, occupied territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-waututh Coast Salish peoples, to express in the heart of Western empire, the united Palestinian body. Takātuf contemplates the role of art in shaping narratives drawn from lived experiences, moving from art as merely a passive reflection, towards a vital force of change.
Takatuf, meaning shoulder-to-shoulder, offers work that is brimming with emotions and feelings that manifest through a diversity of artistic media including weaving, painting, photography, and sculpture, all represented in print.
